PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader connected to a network which ensures not only the confidentiality of a read image but also the security of action itself using the image reader. SOLUTION: An image reader 1 connected to a terminal device 2 through a network 3 includes; a password providing means 11 which receives a password request from the terminal device 2 to generate a password and transmits the password to the terminal device 2; a password input means 12 for manually inputting a password; an authentication means 13 for collating the password inputted by the password input means 12 with the password transmitted to the terminal device 2 by the password providing means 11; and an image reading means 14 for reading an image. The image reading means 14 is so configured that an image is read in the case that the authentication means 13 determines that the inputted password is identical to the transmitted password.
