PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing the number of bits of a digital signal required for operation by adjusting the amplitude of the digital signal. SOLUTION: A digital signal outputted while being band divided to the first stage by windowing 8 and analysis band division filters 9, 10 and 11 is subjected to nonlinear amplitude compression by amplitude conversion 18, 19, 20 of the digital signal before orthogonal conversion in order to decrease the number of bits of the digital signal. Operational load resulting from numerousness of the number of bits of the digital signal can be reduced by processing the digital signals outputted from 18, 19, 20 through an orthogonal converter 21 where the number of bits of the digital signal being used during operation is reduced as much as possible.
