PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a dynamic range of an optical device. SOLUTION: An optical diffraction grating (200) includes a substrate (222) and a diffraction surface 225 comprising, for example, diffraction grooves (210). The diffraction grating has a spatially varying diffraction efficiency which increases or decreases as a function of distance from a reference location (220) at which an incident light beam is received at the grating. The spatially varying diffraction efficiency of the grating may be accomplished by selectively changing or modifying the shape, size, depth, profile, pitch and optical properties of the diffraction grooves at predetermined locations on the grating.
