<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and inexpensive method for manufacturing an optically active alcohol of high optical purity, and a novel optically active ruthenium compound useful as a catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The optically active ruthenium compound is prepared from a ruthenium complex represented by formula (1) (wherein A is an aromatic ligand; and X is a halogen ion) and an optically active ligand represented by formula (2) (wherein C<SP>a</SP>and C<SP>b</SP>are each a carbon atom; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or the like, and at least one of them is different from the others; and R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP>and R<SP>7</SP>are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or the like).
