PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a medium-chained, (un)substituted saturated hydrocarbon in a high yield at high selectivity under a mild condition. SOLUTION: The hydrocarbon of formula (3): X<SP>1</SP>-(CR<SP>11</SP>R<SP>12</SP>-CR<SP>13</SP>R<SP>14</SP>)<SB>n</SB>-Y<SP>1</SP>(wherein n is an integer of 1-10) is obtained by reacting a compound of formula (1): X<SP>1</SP>Y<SP>1</SP>(wherein X<SP>1</SP>is a linear or branched (un)substituted saturated hydrocarbon group with 1-18 carbons; and Y<SP>1</SP>is chosen from H, F, Cl, Br and I) and a compound of formula (2) CR<SP>11</SP>R<SP>12</SP>=CR<SP>13</SP>R<SP>14</SP>(wherein R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>12</SP>, R<SP>13</SP>and R<SP>14</SP>are identical to or different from each other and are each independently H, F, Cl, Br, I or a linear or branched (un)substituted hydrocarbon group) under stirring and light irradiation.
