<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image signal processing device and its method for increasing a compression ratio greatly without causing image quality disorder. <P>SOLUTION: In an image processing unit 2, an original image signal made up of continuous N×N pixel blocks is decomposed into two or more images made up of first image to n-th image by taking out pixels at the same position of each block. An edge position is detected from the first decomposed image, and each pixel value corresponding to edge position information is acquired from images other than the first image. A difference between a pixel value estimated by calculation from the first image and the obtained pixel value is calculated.
