PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect passage of a work piece, by observing fine variations in the light quantity during the passage of the work piece, while attaining compactness of a work piece passage detecting device. SOLUTION: In the work piece passage detecting device 11 which is equipped with an aperture 33, through which a small chip-like electronic component 39 passes, a photoelectric type sensor, a detecting section of which is deployed at the rim of this aperture 33, the photoelectric type sensor is equipped with optical fibers 13a to 13d extending to the rim of aperture 33 and, by disassembling a plurality of wires 27, comprising an optical fiber at least at the front edge part of the optical fiber, to array a plurality of wire 27 along the rim of aperture 33, forms the light-projecting side detecting sections 28a and 28b and the light-receiving side detecting sections 28c and 28d.
