PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine capable of implementing an arbitrary sewing pattern. SOLUTION: A sewing machine M, in which a sewing needle 8 jointly works with a retaining frame 11 that is moved in the directions perpendicular to the up-down movement of the sewing needle 8 in relation to the needle 8, produces stitches in a cloth held in the sewing range of the retaining frame 11, based on sewing data. When the sewing pattern based on the sewing data inputted through a control panel 20 is within the sewing range of the retaining frame 11, the retaining frame 11 moves in relation to the sewing needle 8, so as to trace the pattern based on the sewing data. On the other hand, when the sewing pattern based on the sewing data is not within the sewing range of the retaining frame 11, the retaining frame 11 is controlled to be stopped so as not to move. Whether the sewing pattern based on the inputted sewing data is or is not within the sewing range of the retaining frame 11, those sewing data are stored in EEPROM 104. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
