The process consists of spraying a backing material such as a non-woven fabric, a thick knitted material or a foam with a pulp containing leather fibres, a base liquid, and one or more bonding and suspension agents. The pulp is applied in an even thickness, e.g. by a modified pain spray gun, and is followed by drying, preferably by applying a vacuum to the underside of the backing. A suction unit can be used to remove the spray mist, and compression can be applied to the material to remove surplus moisture. The mixture can also be heated before spraying to make for more efficient moisture removal. The covered material can be given a coating of varnish, for example, to make it more scratch resistant.
