PURPOSE:To provide a TN type liquid crystal display element contg. a liquid crystal compsn. consisting of a combination of specified two types of liquid crystal compds., which has a wide nematic range and excellent multiplex driving property and is suitable for dot matrix display. CONSTITUTION:At least one compd. of formula I (where R1 and R2 are 1-10C atraight-chain alkyl) (e.g. compd. of formula II), at least one compd. of formula III, IV or V (where R3-8 are 1-10C straight-chain alkyls) (e.g. compd. of formula VI) and, when necessary, at least one compd. of formula VII (where R9 is 1-10C straight-chain alkyl; n is 1-2) (e.g. formula VIII) are mixed together. The resulting liquid crystal compsn. is injected into a cell obtained by sealing a plate with a pair of electrodes to produce a liquid crystal cell and a pair of polarizing plates are provided on both sides of the liquid crystal cell.
