PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor memory device which can vary the number of banks to be refreshed in executing the refresh and its operation method. SOLUTION: The method for generating an address for designating the memory bank which becomes an object for the refresh in the refresh operation for the semiconductor memory device can vary the number of the memory banks which become the object for the refresh in the refresh operation in the semiconductor memory device by using not only the bank address but a control address not separately utilized in the refresh operation. Overall performance of the semiconductor system can be improved because a period of time assigned to the refresh of the semiconductor memory device is shortened or changed further during the overall operation of the system.
