In a 'sand' filter a single pipe system is used both to collect filtered water and to distribute backwashing water and air during cleaning of the 'sand', holes 13, on the bottom centre line of each pipe 12, being for filtered and backwashing water and nozzles 14, on the longitudinal horizontal centre plane of each pipe, being for air distribution. Pipes 12 are asbestos cement, of 4 or 5 inches diameter, and open into channel (15) (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), which collects filtered water and distributes backwash water. Above wall (18) is a channel for collecting overflow water during backwashing. Each pipe 12 bears on a resilient rubber ring 19, 21 at each end, a plate 20 closing one end and having bolt or bolts 22 bearing on wall 23 to permit adjustment or removal of the pipe. Air is supplied to pipes 12 during backwashing of the sand either through channel (15) or by a pipe network connecting to each pipe 12 on the highest level thereof. Venting means may also be fitted to channel (15) or to each pipe 12. |
