A coating assembly applies paste or liquid to the moving surface of a paper or carton web (2) as it passes around a drum (1). Surplus is removed by a scraper blade supported by a scraper beam (3.1) that can be rotated clear of the drum surface for cleaning and maintenance. The blade holder rotates (A) through an angle of from 135 to 225 for cleaning or maintenance. The cleaning task is effected by an automated sliding rider (3.6) that deposits the surplus and residues into a trap (4).
