The method involves blocking a mechanical steering rod between a steering handle of a driver and a steerable vehicle wheels by a steering lock, during non-usage of a motor vehicle. The mechanically blocked steering rod is automatically released temporarily before releasing the steering lock by suitable startup of an electric motor. The locked steering rod and the steering lock are recognized by a steering moment sensor. An independent claim is also included for a steering system for a motor vehicle.
