<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display apparatus of a vertical alignment mode wherein the direction in which a liquid crystal molecule falls can be suitably controlled and alignment defect generated in a connection part of island like parts can be suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: An insulating layer and a pixel electrode 9 are layered on a switching element 30 and the switching element 30 and the pixel electrode 9 are connected to each other via a contact hole C provided in the insulating layer.
