Coating mass (I), for coating paper surfaces, comprises at least one binding agent, at least one pigment and at least one comb polymer derived from a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer, whose side chain is derived from ethylenic unsaturated and silicon groups containing monomers. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method of improving the opacity and whiteness of papers comprising coating the surface of the paper with (I); and (2) use of comb polymers with polymer backbone of water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers derived from ethylenic unsaturated and silicon organic group containing monomers exhibiting side groups, for improving the opacity and whiteness of the papers.
