<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document editing apparatus capable of assisting a user's document editing work on the basis of characters or figures handwritten on a printing document. <P>SOLUTION: A control part 100 included in the document editing apparatus 10 comprises a difference processing part 103 for acquiring a difference image between a printing document read by a scanner 30 and an electronic document, a difference image position determining part 104 for determining the position of the difference image in the electronic document, a symbol pattern identifying part 105 for identifying edit symbols included in the difference image, and an edit processing part 107 for performing various editing assistance for users. The difference image equivalent to the handwritten characters is displayed on the position determined by the difference image position determination part 104, thereby an environment for editing documents without referring to the printing document at all can be provided to the user.
