PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel material for organic thin film transistor having a high carrier mobility, and also to provide an organic thin film transistor employing it. SOLUTION: The material for organic thin film transistor contains a phosphine oxide compound represented by the general formula (1). In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>may be identical or different, each selected from hydrogen, alkyl group, cycloalkyl group, heterocyclic group, alkenyl group, cycloalkenyl group, alkinyl group, alkoxy group, alkylthio group, arylether group, arylthioether group, aryl group, heteroaryl group, cyano group, carbonyl group, ester group, carbamoyl group, amino group, cyril group, and a condensed ring formed between adjacent substituents.
