PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem in which a document placing reference position on a document placing table varies according to the type of an image forming apparatus, this may cause an operator to place a document in a wrong reference position, especially, a visually handicapped person may not find the correct reference position for document placement on the document placing table. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a notice method using a display output device 4 and a notice method using a voice output device 3 with respect to a notice method for erroneous placement of a document 14, and an operator can select and set which notice method is used. Upon the placement of the document 14 on the document placing table 11, the placed state of the document 14 is detected. In the case where the document 14 is not placed correctly, the user is informed of the fact by the informing method that has been set. As a means for detecting the placement state of the document 14, the apparatus includes a mechanism that measures a distance L from the left edge of the document 14 to the left edge of the document placing table 15 and a distance L2 from the right edge of the document 14 to the right edge of the document placing table 15 and determines that the document 14 is not placed correctly in the case where the value of a difference between the L1 and L2 is larger than a specified value.
