PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earth retaining method for an excavated ditch for rationally carrying out earth retaining work of the excavated ditch, and an earth retaining device for the excavated ditch suitable for carrying out the earth retaining method. SOLUTION: A pair of vertical support members formed with guide grooves in both front and rear faces are connected at their side faces by two or more struts intersecting the guide groove forming parts and assembled in ladder shape. One ends in the installed direction of a pair of earth retaining panels are fitted and fixed into the guide grooves, and the other ends in the longitudinal direction of the earth retaining panels are connected by a minimum number of temporary connecting struts to form an earth retaining timbering unit assembled in box shape. The earth retaining timbering unit is hung and installed in the excavated ditch placing the vertical support member assembled side of the earth retaining timbering unit to face a ditch excavating direction. An earth retaining timbering unit hung in next in accordance with ditch excavating work is installed by inserting and connecting the earth retaining panel ends on the side without the vertical support members into the open guide grooves of the vertical support members of the existing earth retaining timbering unit, and removing the temporary connecting struts.
