The present invention relates to an electric discharge machine and a method for carrying out the electric discharge machining in the electric discharge machine in which, after an electrode ( 21 ) and an electrode guide holder ( 25 ) are attached to an electrode holder ( 23 ), in advance, which is in turn mounted on a spindle ( 13 ), the electrode guide holder ( 25 ) is gripped by a gripper arm ( 29 ) and moved to a distal end of the electrode ( 21 ) so that the machining is carried out while the distal end of the electrode ( 21 ) being supported by an electrode guide ( 61 ). When the electrode must be replaced due to the exhaustion thereof during the electric discharge machining of a fine hole, the above electric discharge machine and method make it possible to assuredly carry out the replacement of the electrode in a short time.
