摘要 [PROBLEMS] To provide a tool suitable for the precision finishing or grooving of a quenched steel, which is made of a CBN sintered compact and has a coating film reduced in thickness being formed thereon. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A surface- coated high hardness material for a tool, which comprises a CBN sintered compact as a base material and, formed on the surface thereof, at least one layer of the coating film comprising, as a main component, a compound having Ti, Al and at least one element selected from among C, N and O and having a thickness of not less than 0.1 mum and less than 1 mum. A grooving tool using the above material exhibits excellent performance. Above coating films include an intermediate layer, an abrasion-resistant film and a surface layer.
