PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is free of problems that density unevenness and ghost formation due to a history of a prior image are caused and that photosensitive characteristics of a photoreceptor are greatly spoiled. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has the photosensitive drum and an intermediate transfer belt; and the intermediate transfer belt can expand and shrink and a toner image formed on the photoreceptor drum is transferred to the surface side of the intermediate transfer belt. The intermediate transfer belt has a belt base material made of an elastic material and coating layers coating the top surface side and reverse surface side of the belt base material, and the coating layers have higher electric resistance than the belt base material, the reverse-side coating layer having higher electric resistance than the top-side coating layer.
