PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display apparatus in which a back focus of a projection lens can be shortened even in the case that the projection lens and a color synthesis means are disposed apart from each other so as not to abut on each other, so that the projection lens is made small-sized and light in weight, and the quality of projected images is improved. SOLUTION: In a transmission liquid crystal projector 20, a transparent block 26 is disposed in an optical path between a light exit surface of a color synthesis prism 24 and a light incidence part of a projection lens 25. The transparent block is thicker than portions protruding toward a projection lens 25 beyond a fourth surface 244 being a light exit surface of a color synthesis prism 24, of package parts 232R and 232B of liquid crystal panels 23R and 23B and has thickness so as to not touch on package parts 232R and 232B of liquid crystal panels 23R and 23B when the projection lens 25 is disposed, and is form of glass or the like having a refractive index higher than that of air.
