PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device suitable for making high in luminance and high in performance using a plurality of laser beams, and to provide an image generation apparatus. SOLUTION: The optical device is provided with an one-dimensional (1D) optical modulation element 5 for modulating laser beams; a beam-converging means 4 for converging a plurality of laser beams from a laser light source 2 and irradiating the 1D optical modulation element 5 with the converged laser beam on a plane rectangular to the major axis direction of the element 5; and a direction control means 3 for controlling the angles of light propagation directions of respective laser beams, making the laser beams parallel and making the parallel laser beams incident on the beam converging means 4. If it is defined that the deviation of the incident angle on the beam converging means 4 isθ, pixel size in the minor axis direction of the 1D optical modulation element 5 is W, the absolute value of the allowed range of the positional deviation of the laser beam, from an individual pixel element constituting the 1D optical modulation element 5 isαW (where 0<α<1), and the focal distance concerned in the beam converging means 4 is f, the direction is adjusted so that the absolute value ofθbecomes≤αW/f.
