An error diffusion control device and method for a video apparatus is provided for reducing contour noise in a displayed picture. In the method, video data is stored in a memory, and the ratio of black data to the stored video data is determined, where the black data represents black color in the stored video data. The black data ratio is compared with at least one reference ratio, and an error diffusion function for the video data is controlled according to the compared result.
