<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improvement in the audio codec of conventional technologies, generating the illusion of stereo by the post-treatment of a received monaural signal. <P>SOLUTION: These improvements are attained, by extracting a stereo image describing a parameter on the coder side, and the improvements are transmitted and used for controlling a stereo generator on the decoder side. The gap, between a simple pseudo stereo method and the existing method of an intrinsic stereo coding, is filled by using a parametric stereo coding in a new type. A more advanced stereo mode is enabled by introducing the stereo balance parameter, and the foundation of a new method for the stereo coding of a spectral envelope, particularly useful for a system that uses induced HFR (a high-frequency reconstruction) is formed, in addition to the higher stereo mode.
