PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which eliminates the need to make a belt width unnecessarily large and the need to unnecessarily make an axial direction width of a detection body unnecessarily large and can be made low-cost and small-sized by relating a non-image area of a belt, the maximum walk quantity of the belt, the axial direction width of the detection body, and the spot diameter of a sensor. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus equipped with the sensor 103 which reads the detection body 101, and a belt driving device which drives the belt tensed by a plurality of rollers by at least one or more of the rollers, the detection body 101 is arranged in the non-image area of the belt 60 and satisfies a relationship of D+W<M<H-W, where W is the maximum movement quantity of the belt 50 along the tension roller axes, H the non-image area width defined by (belt width-image area width)/2, D the spot diameter of the sensor reading the detection body, and M the width of the detection body along the tension roller axes.
