PURPOSE:To execute the reduction/enlargement of a picture without the generation of picture deterioration by adding a rapid step pulse generating circuit for generating fast pulses corresponding to the prescribed times step pulses. CONSTITUTION:A document is subscanned by step pulses generated from a step pulse generating circuit 11. On the other hand, fast pulses generated from a fast pulse generating circuit 12 are counted up to a reference value previously set by a pulse counting circuit 13. When the count value reaches the reference value, the counting circuit 13 generates a reading timing signal. Receiving the reading timing signal, a picture reading circuit 14 outputs a picture having the prescribed reduction/enlargement ratio to the document. Consequently, the reduction enlargement of the document can be attained without generating picture deterioration.
