The invention relates to nuclear and molecular physics and can be used for detecting molecules of explosive and toxic substances in the air and for producing negative ion beams for scientific researches. The inventive method for producing negative ions consists in irradiating a pulse beam of quasichromatic electromagnetic electrons propagating in a gaseous medium by a pulse of quasichromatic electromagnetic radiation. The length of the electromagnetic and electron pulses must be closed to each other. The required frequency of the electromagnetic radiation depends on a kinetic energy electrons in the beam and on a negative ion binding energy, thereby making it possible to obtain the selectivity of the method and to produce negative ions of well defined atoms and molecules whose concentration in a gaseous medium can be small.
