A device (7), or a respiratory support system that includes a device, and a method of using the device, for introducing pulses to a patient breathing cycle which is at least partially assisted by a respiratory support system. The device has a body, with a passage running through the body between the inlet (8) and the outlet (9). A valve (15) is located in the passage, and cycles between open and at least partially closed. The cycle frequency is greater than the frequency of the patient breathing cycle. The device is connected to the patient respiratory support system in such a manner that at least a portion of the expiratory gases from a patient pass through the passage (12, 13).
