A liquid crystal display (100) comprising a picture element electrode (14) provided on the liquid crystal layer (30) side of a first substrate (100a) and a counter electrode (22) provided on a second substrate (100b). The picture element electrode (14) has a solid part (14b) including a plurality of unit solid parts (14b'). In the liquid crystal layer (30), a liquid crystal domain is formed which is in a vertically aligned state when a voltage is not applied and in a radially gradient alignment state in a region corresponding to the unit solid part (14b') by an oblique electric field generated around the unit solid part (14b') when a voltage is applied. The liquid crystal display (100) further comprises an auxiliary capacitor (44) electrically connected in parallel with a liquid crystal capacitor. At least a part of the auxiliary capacitor (44) is located in a region of the first substrate (100a) provided with no solid part (14b).
