PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device with little stress on a lamp, capable of discriminating the kind of the rated power of a plurality of lamps in the same detection and a control system irrespective of states at the start-up of a lamp. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a power conversion circuit supplying power to a high-pressure discharge lamp by converting power from a direct-current power source; a lighting control circuit controlling the supply power of the power conversion circuit; and a discharge lamp discriminating circuit discriminating the kind of the rated power of the discharge lamps by detecting their electric characteristics. The device has a plurality of high pressure lamps with different kinds of rated power from each other as the lamps to be loaded, and connects and lights one kind of the above. The kind of the rated power output of the connected high-pressure discharge lamp is discriminated by the discharge lamp discriminating circuit depending on electric characteristics of the discharge lamp at a transient period of the high pressure discharge lamp up to stable lighting after the start-up, and at a stable period after the elapse of a substantial time after the start-up, and based on the result of the discrimination, the supply power of the power conversion circuit is controlled to light the connected high-pressure lamp.
