PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrocarbon base oil which is more friendly to health in terms of a stimulus to the skin, a sick house syndrome or the like and is more friendly to environmental sanitation in terms of air pollution or the like. SOLUTION: The hydrocarbon base oil has (a) a boiling point in the range of 260-600°C, (b) a kinematic viscosity at 40°C in the range of 9-90 mm<SP>2</SP>/s, (c) a viscosity index of 95 or more, (d) a pour point of -5.0°C or lower, (e) a total aromatic content of 3 mass% or less, (f) a polycyclic aromatic content of 1 mass% or less, (g) a sulfur content of 0.1 mass% or less, and (h) an aniline point of 95°C or higher.
