Monitoring of track contact wires (1) fastened on support masts (5) by tensioning devices and balance weight (12) involves determining the temperature and/or wear of the lines. The position of the balance weight on the support mast is measured, the deviation of the balance weight from a neutral position at a known temperature is recorded, and from the position deviation and length expansion coefficient of the contact wire material an additional parameter of the contact wire is derived. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a device to carry out the above method.
