PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-precision valve clearance measuring method which has an improvement in traditional problems to measure a valve clearance with higher precision. SOLUTION: Before the measuring origins of measuring devices 21, 22 are set, a break-in to rotate a cam 6 is performed so that a cam profile part 18 is brought into contact with a rocker arm 4 first from the pivot 5 side, thus the rocker arm can be corrected to the position of the pivot. Then the inclination of a valve stem 11 is corrected by pressing down a valve retainer 16 and moving a valve 3 downward by extrusion. As a result of this, the measurement of the valve clearance can be performed with higher precision. Because of the process of measuring the amount of a drop of a cam, the position of the cam 6 at the time of the setting of the measuring origin of the cam displacement measuring device 22 is made invariant. The process of measuring the amount of a drop of the cam sets the measuring origin of the cam displacement measuring device 22 with a thickness gauge 24 mounted, removes the thickness gauge 24, and measures the amount of a drop of the cam 6.
