<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method in which an improved removal of contaminants from the surface of an image transfer member is possible. <P>SOLUTION: The image transfer device for a sheet-fed image reproduction system is disclosed. In the image transfer device, the improved removal of the contaminants from the surface of the image transfer member is possible by using a tacky surface cleaning member contacting the image transfer member surface. The tacky surface of the cleaning member is rejuvenated substantially without affecting the productivity of the image reproduction system by applying predetermined patterns of cleaning substance on the image transfer member surface in the non-image areas, being the part of the inter-image areas coinciding with the inter-sheet areas.
