<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a high-quality image by performing surface potential correction appropriate to characteristics of a photoreceptor even if the photoreceptor has the characteristics of unevenness in potential with steep change in the main scanning direction. <P>SOLUTION: A pulse current control circuit 50 stores control data corresponding to potential measured for each sampling point beforehand. The control data is read synchronously with the scanning movement of a laser beam, smoothed by being converted into an analog signal after interpolation if required, and inputted to a pulse current source 42 as a signal Vcom. The pulse current source 42 changes the intensity of an output laser beam from a semiconductor laser 43 by changing an output current value corresponding to a value of the signal Vcom. By this, the unevenness in surface potential of the photoreceptor scanned with the laser is eliminated.
