PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the improving effect of fuel economy and emission, by effectively performing combustion by compressed self-ignition in a succeeding cylinder in a further wide area, while restraining the occurrence of knocking, in an engine in the form of performing the compressed self-ignition in the succeeding cylinder, by performing stratified combustion in a preceding cylinder. SOLUTION: When set in a special operation mode in a partial load area of the engine, lean combustion is performed in the preceding cylinder, and combustion by the compressed self-ignition is performed in the succeeding cylinder. Since the EGR ratio is increasingly controlled in response to an increase in a load in a load area less than a preset critical load value CL, fuel consumption caused by an increase in the load can be maximally restrained. While, since the EGR ratio R increases at a stretch in the load area not less than the critical load value CL, the knocking can be effectively restrained by slowing the combustion in the succeeding cylinder.
