PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer that can use various kinds of paper rolls to which printing media having different sizes are preliminary adhered respectively by detecting the each of rolls and can reduce a time period necessary for detecting and setting a top-of-form of the printing medium. SOLUTION: A first sensor 7 is provided to a portion upstream side of a print head 5 in a conveyance direction of a paper roll 9 and a second sensor 8 is provided to a portion downstream side thereof. The size of the printing medium 12 is detected according to a distance between two continuous detection means 13 detected by the first sensor 7 and the position of the top-of-form of the printing medium 12 detected by the first sensor 7 is detected by the second sensor 8.
