PURPOSE:To obtain a hydroxy-substituted heterocyclic compound useful as an intermediate for insecticide, in high yield in a short time under mild condition, by using an ether compound derived from an easily available dihalogenated compound in two steps under extremely mild condition and opening the ether compound with an acid. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxy-substituted heterocyclic compound of formula VI (e.g. 2-hydroxy-6-isobutylthiopyrazine) can be produced by opening ether bond of ethers of formula I (R<1> is alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylmethyl or 2- methylthioethyl; R<2> is alkyl or benzyl; Ar is group of formula II - formula V) (e.g. 2-benzyloxy-6-isobutylthiopyrazine) with an acid (e.g. hydrogen bromide, hydrogen iodide, etc.). The starting compound of formula I is derived from an easily available dihalogenated compound having corresponding Ar group via a compound of formula hal[Ar]OR<2> or formula R<1>S[Ar]hal'.
