The unit has a frame construction extending over the interior width of the vehicle, and has a box shaped hollow section and a cross beam (3). A wall of the cross beam has a minimized assembly opening (12) for bringing in a functional module (10, 15) with a functional element (11, 13). A rollover protection system is fitted into the inside of the hollow section and the functional module has a geometrical configuration so that in the final installed condition two facing laminar wall parts, reinforcing the hollow section are fitted.
