A frame synchroniser for input and output compressed video signals having different frame rates determines a difference in synchronisation between the input signal and the output signal. When the difference approaches a frame period of the output signal an appropriate type of frame is deleted or inserted, as appropriate, to bring the signals back into synchronisation. Consequential temporal changes are made to succeeding frames such that the output compressed video signal has a predetermined valid sequence of frame types with validly predicted frames. Frames inserted by the synchroniser may be copied from existing frames or synthesised by the synchroniser. |
