During needle punching the non-woven is held between a pressure plate and a stitch plate (1), both of which have holes (2) through which the needles pass. The plate (1) consists of a relatively thin sheet (4), e.g. 2 to 5 mm thick, with ribs (3) extending at right angles, e.g. 15 to 40 deep, and ending in a plane parallel to the sheet (4). The holes (2) can be circular or oval and can have a larger diameter than the gap between the ribs. An independent claim is also included for a stitch plate of this construction to support a non-woven during needle punching. The ribs are connected to each other at the end of the plate for additional strength.
