<p>An alarm signal is transmitted by the radio device (4) carried by an isolated worker (2) and is received by portable equipment (1) situated at a point accessible to a public telephone network (6). In response to an alarm signal from the portable radio, the processing equipment (1) transmits a pre-recorded voice message to a surveillance station (15, 16). The portable equipment is intended to enable communication between an isolated worker (2) provided with a portable radio device (4), and personnel in a surveillance service. An alarm signal is transmitted by the portable radio device (4) and is received by portable equipment (1) which is situated by the user in a region accessible to the radio signal, and also accessible to a public network, such as a GSM mobile telephone network (6). In response to an alarm signal from the portable radio, the processing equipment (1) transmits a pre-recorded voice message to at least one surveillance station (15, 16), via a public communication network.
