PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent any failure due to the occupancy of a speech channel during a holding period. SOLUTION: This telephone system is provided with a telephone set and a communication controller. This communication controller is configured to control voice communication between the telephone set and another telephone set which are connected through a network to each other by relaying those telephone sets. The telephone set is provided with an operating means and a signal transmitting means. The signal transmitting means transmits a holding signal to a communication controller when an operating means receives a predetermined holding operation in a voice communication period with the other telephone set, and transmits a holding release signal to the communication controller when the operating means receives a predetermined holding release operation after receiving a predetermined holding operation. Also, the communication controller is provided with a holding control means. The holding control means is configured to stop voice communication at the telephone set side at the time of receiving a holding signal from the telephone set, and to resume the voice communication between the telephone set and the other telephone set at the time of receiving the holding release signal from the telephone set.
