PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a highly reliable and inexpensive image display device causing no leakage, causing little aged deterioration of electron source characteristics in particular, and having high display quality, by a simple process. SOLUTION: This image display device is equipped with a vacuum vessel formed by making a first substrate 101 face a second substrate and sealing the peripheral part of the first substrate and the second substrate, an electron source disposed in this vacuum vessel, and an ion pump. This manufacturing method of the image display device has a process to join an ion pump vessel 112 to an opening part formed in the first substrate or the second substrate, prior to a process to seal the peripheral part of the first substrate 101 and the second substrate.
