PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission, capable of enabling range changing operation at the time of fail through mechanical connection of a select lever to a select position changing device, while enlarging the degree of freedom of layout by compactness of the select lever, and providing select lever operation force characteristics in accordance with requests. SOLUTION: A free groove 131 of a first rotation part 13 and a projection 171 of a second rotation part 17 are engaged with each other to be connected by a clearance connection mechanism having a clearance. The relative position between the first rotation part 13 and the second rotation part 17 is detected by a position sensor 6, and driving of an assist actuator 2 is controlled in such a way that the relative position is close to a neutral point.
