PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of tooth hammer sound following displacement of a slider, in an internal combustion engine equipped with a variable valve system changing a working angle of an intake cam. SOLUTION: The variable valve system rotates the slider by displacing the slider in the axial direction by an actuator, changes a relative phase difference between an input arm and an output arm, and changes the working angle of the intake cam of an intake cam shaft. An electronic control unit controls the actuator such that the working angle of the intake cam becomes a target working angle corresponding to an operating state of the engine (Steps 100, 190). When a racing state is started, by maintaining the target working angle at that time until a working angle return condition is achieved, in the axial direction, the electronic control unit regulates displacement of the slider to the direction in which a helical spline of the slider moves away from helical splines of the input and output arms (Steps 110 to 170).
