PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic endoscope apparatus capable of observing both a white light image and an autologous fluorescence image in which the visibility of the autologous fluorescence image is improved. SOLUTION: Image information of a white light image acquired by irradiating a subject with white light is divided into a predetermined number of divisions and stored. Image information of an autologous fluorescence image acquired by irradiating the subject with excited light is also divided into similar divisions and is stored. The luminance level of the white light image and that of the autologous fluorescence image are compared in every division (S118). The luminance level difference of one division is then compared with the luminance level differences of other divisions to eliminate such a luminance level difference whose value is considerably different from those of other luminance level differences. Therefore, those luminance level differences whose values have small differences are stored (S120-S126). An average of the stored luminance level differences are then calculated, and a gain control value of the luminance level of the autologous fluorescence image is calculated on the basis of the average (S128).
